Newcomers and Visitors

Newcomers and Visitors

Our church is located at 3501 Walton Way Extension in West Augusta. We welcome visitors to our worship services and other activities. Hybrid Sunday worship is weekly at 11 a.m. and special activities are often scheduled throughout the week. Faith Formation for our children begins in the sanctuary at 11 a.m. and will often continue in breakout groups mid-service.

If you're new to UUCA, our congregation will do its best to help you get acquainted and feel welcome! Our greeters welcome members, friends, and guests each Sunday morning prior to services. Your greeter will provide an order of service, assist in finding childcare for your children (if desired), help locate restrooms or smoking areas, and will welcome you into the sanctuary for Sunday Worship.

Newcomers visit and often become involved in congregational life for many reasons:

Some come looking for a spiritual community defined by active love rather than creed or dogma. Some come looking for a place to raise children empowered to responsibly forge their own spiritual path.  Some who feel excluded elsewhere relish the spirit of inclusion at UUCA.  Some come looking to form friendships with like-hearted people. Some come looking for a place to amplify their power within justice coalitions. Whatever you’re looking for, we hope you’ll get what you need every time you visit.

Many services include a sermon, most often given by Rev. Nic Filzen. His sermons amplify our mission, covenant, and our Unitarian Universalist values. Very often he addresses social justice issues and other concerns in the wider community which prevent freedom and wholeness for everyone.  Rev. Nic also frequently offers sermons in dialogue - deep relational reflections about a given topic with a member of the UUCA worship team, a religious leader from another congregation or faith, or a local activist.  A shared reflection with somebody whose unique and intersectional experiences and stories can spark transformation and solidarity in each of us.  And other times, the congregation will do something altogether different and fun.

Guest speakers and lay members of the congregation also present services, which can focus on community issues, spiritual growth, and Unitarian Universalist history. We draw from many sources and this religious pluralism enriches our loving and covenantal faith.

Visitors are encouraged to introduce themselves, but if you prefer to remain unnoticed at first, we will not embarrass you. The format of most services includes hymns, offering and offertory, and shared spiritual practice.  Occasionally we depart from the usual order of service as we continue to creatively engage with each other and life.

What to wear for adults and children

As you will soon notice, the “dress code” at our church is “no dress code.” Our church family is varied: some will be dressed for the office or dinner at a nice restaurant, others will be in jeans and tee shirt, others will wear shorts and sneakers.  Children’s classes are very hands on, with art activities and outdoor play, so children might dress accordingly.

Whether you come to visit once or stay for a lifetime of religious growth and fellowship, UUCA may be a place for you.

Ours is a progressive, locally governed congregation in covenant with the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.
